Faith Behind The Song: "So So Good" Phil Wickham, Brandon Lake, Elevation Worship

When things are difficult AND you feel discouraged?

It's tempting to scroll social media, hoping to smile at some memes or find a funny video. But, what if that scrolling only leaves you feeling heavier or darker? When we feel heavy and dark, we need something to bring light and life into our hearts. Instead of endlessly scrolling through content that drains us, what if we chose something that actually fills us with joy?

Well, if you need a ray of light and a blast of joy, then look no further than "So So Good" from Phil Wickham, Brandon Lake and Elevation Worship. The song was recorded live in Phoenix, Arizona in July 2025, as part of the Summer Worship Nights Tour, when Chris Brown was the surprise guest joining Wickham and Lake.

During a live video on Wickham's channel including all three artists, each of them used the phrase "joy bomb" to describe the song. In that same video, Wickham shared that he loved the song because it is "a fun song to sing and play, so filled with truth and has perspective-changing power - it hits all the check marks."

The beauty of the song is that it reminds us of both something deeply true - God is always faithful - in the form of something deeply fun. Sometimes, we can get caught up in seeking or even defending the truth that we forget that joy is the second item listed in the fruit of the spirit.

The Scriptures consistently encourage us to consider the goodness of God. This is why God regularly commands His people in the Old Testament to build monuments or observe festivals, so they can remember His faithful love towards them. However, we aren't just encouraged to remember, but we are also encouraged to rejoice.

The biblical foundation for this kind of joy runs deep throughout Scripture. Consider these passages that speak to the power of remembering God's goodness:

David declares in Psalm 30 that: "Weeping may last through the night, but joy comes with the morning." He also anticipates the Messiah's arrival with joy in Psalm 16. "You will show me the way of life, granting me the joy of your presence and the pleasures of living with you forever." Finally, joy is the secret sauce to life change. In Nehemiah 8, the people repented upon discovering how far they'd strayed from God's law. In that moment, Nehemiah reminded them: "Don't be dejected and sad, for the joy of the Lord is your strength!"

Joy is strength seems counter-intuitive. But Phil Wickham has seen the power of combining important truths with joyful music. In an interview with The Christian Beat, he shared why this song holds a special place in his heart. "I love this song so much! What a blast and a blessing to share in the writing and releasing of it with my friends at Elevation Worship and my good friend, Brandon Lake...It never gets old singing about the goodness of God. It changes our perspectives, lifts hearts, and heals souls. Remembering His goodness in the past helps us find faith to trust Him through the present difficulties. I can't wait to sing So So Good with the church for years to come. GOD IS GOOD! ALL THE TIME!"

One of my favorite parts of the song is the first verse. The lyrics describe the power of remembering God's faithfulness.

"When I start remembering how good You've been
Fear turns to worship, tears turn to praise
Chains of depression broken by Grace."

In the same live video mentioned above, Brown shared the impact of the line from verse 1 - "When I start remembering…" He shared that if he wakes up in a bad mood or has a difficult conversation, the song is a check for him, inviting him to stop and give thanks for God's blessings in his life, as well as remembering all of the times and places where God has shown his faithfulness to Brown and his family.

We have alarm clocks that wake us up in the morning, apps that remind us to pick up our groceries or go run an errand, and cars that ensure we don't lock our keys inside and walk away. But, what helps us remember God's faithfulness as well as the essential power of joy in our lives? Listening to "So So Good" is a reminder that God is more faithful than we can comprehend and joy is available in places we didn't expect.

If you need a big dose of joy or a reminder of God's goodness in your life, you can't go wrong by listening to "So So Good" today. The next time you're tempted to scroll through content that leaves you feeling empty, consider choosing something that actually fills your heart with the joy and truth your soul is craving.
