I recently interrupted a conversation with a friend to help my wife retrieve a wallet she'd forgotten.
When I sat back down, I asked, "Now, where were we?"
You've probably said those words yourself. Something interrupts an important conversation, and when you return, you need a moment to remember where you left off.
Our attention gets hijacked every day by good and bad interruptions. A loved one wants to share something important with us. An app wants us to start scrolling. A timer reminds us to check the food in the oven. "There's some drama in the comments. Don't you want to see it?!"
Some interruptions deserve our attention. Others distract us from what matters most.
But regardless of what pulls our attention away, we eventually have to decide where to direct it again.
That's what I love about NONAH's song with Mitch Wong, "Center of Attention." It invites us to redirect our attention toward the One who deserves it most.

The song draws on a variety of Scripture passages, blending deep reverence for God’s character with joy and excitement about a life with God. In a video on Nonah’s Instagram page, Callie Strunk shared her favorite line in the song.
"I love that it just explicitly says, ‘Jesus, you be the center of attention. You be the center of it all.’ And we are giving praise and honor and glory to him and focusing on him. And that was really the heart behind the song. And I love how the chorus makes you feel when you sing it. Your full attention and focus is truly on Jesus."
Strunk’s passion for the song comes through loud and clear. NONAH’s vision for their music is radically Christ-centered. “We believe music is a means to an end — and for us, that end is Jesus. Our prayer is that you encounter Him in every song we release.”
The encounter that “Center of Attention” invites listeners into is full of Scriptural quotes and allusions. One thematic connection led me to Colossians 3:1-2. In that passage, the Apostle Paul writes, “Since you have been raised to new life with Christ, set your sights on the realities of heaven, where Christ sits in the place of honor at God’s right hand. Think about the things of heaven, not the things of earth.”
Though he lived 2,000 years ago, Paul understood the modern battle for attention. What captures our attention shapes our attitudes, thoughts, and actions. So when our minds get consumed by worries or distractions, it’s easy to lose sight of Jesus.
When we’ve fallen victim to this mental trap, Paul encourages us to take responsibility for our thoughts and intentionally redirect our hearts and minds back to Christ. We can ask our thoughts, “Where were we?” just as we do with a friend whose conversation was interrupted.
Why is Jesus the place our thoughts should return to? Paul answers this question, too! Earlier in his letter to the Colossians, Paul spends several verses in chapter 1 describing Jesus as the One who created all things, holds them all together, and is supreme over everything. Everything exists for and through Jesus. He is the center of attention because He alone is worthy of it.
Can we be honest for a moment? How often do we give our greatest attention to things that matter far less? Things that won’t matter in a few hours, much less a few years?
We often spend days worrying over a situation we cannot control. We make ourselves anxious by wondering what other people think of us. We scroll through endless updates from people we’ve never met, all the while neglecting the One who knows us better than anyone else and loves us more than everyone else. That drift often begins innocently and unintentionally until one day we realize how far off we’ve wandered.
In addition to Paul’s warnings, the writer of Hebrews calls the early church to a relentless focus on Jesus which fuels our perseverance by “keeping our eyes on Jesus, the champion who initiates and perfects our faith.”
What does it mean to keep your eyes on Jesus? I can tell you one thing: it doesn’t mean your difficulties disappear! It doesn’t mean that your situation gets easier or the road you walk gets flatter. When you keep your eyes on Jesus, His example can give you strength, and your focus can remind you to depend on Him, not yourself.
At a time when countless ads target our attention each day, with billions of dollars invested in distraction, “Center of Attention” invites us to a better way. Make Jesus your priority! When you drift, don’t settle for disconnect. Return your focus to Jesus and make Him the center of your attention.
Sometimes, the most important question we can ask ourselves is the one I asked my friend when I returned from my interruption: “Now, where were we?”
I wonder if today is your opportunity to turn your attention back to the One who deserves it above all.
