“How did I end up in the emergency room hundreds of miles from home?”

The short answer: my blood pressure climbed to 199/120 while I sat in the parking lot, on the phone with my doctor. I was scared and bewildered by what was happening to my body.

I had just begun a much-needed sabbatical after a long season of stress and loss in my job as a pastor. Instead, I found myself in an emergency room worried about my life and health. The doctors eventually determined that I had experienced a panic attack.

Where was this coming from?! I knew God was good. I believed He was with me, yet I couldn't understand why He allowed me to reach this point. I didn't know when, or if, that healing would come.

Have you ever struggled between believing in God's goodness and not understanding what's happening in your life? That's the tension at the heart of Erik Nieder & Hope Darst’s song, "Praise You All the Same."

For singer and songwriter Erik Nieder, that tension became deeply personal when his daughter Chancey Grace was born with club feet, a condition that affects both the position and alignment of a child's feet. What followed was a difficult journey of medical treatments, including casts, braces, surgeries, and even physical therapy. Nieder and his wife Callie prayed for their daughter's healing, but they didn't know what the future would hold for her.

As they walked through that painful season, Nieder returned to the story of Job, a man who suffered devastating losses yet refused to turn his back on God. In Job 1:21, Job declares, "The Lord gave me what I had, and the Lord has taken it away. Praise the name of the Lord!" Those words inspired "Praise You All the Same," the song Nieder wrote with fellow songwriter Benji Cowart.

"Praise You All the Same" answers the question, “Could we keep praising God even if our daughter's healing doesn't happen the way we hope?” For Nieder, this wasn't a theological exercise; it was his family’s daily experience for a long time.

Following Jesus is not easy. We’re invited to trust God, even when we don't understand what He's doing. It's easy to praise God when our prayers are answered the way we hoped. But it’s much harder when our dreams are far from our reality.

In the chorus, Nieder sings, "I'll trust You if You do / And I'll trust You if You don't." These words challenge me because they remind me that trusting God means surrendering the outcome to him. Jesus modeled this kind of surrender in the Garden of Gethsemane. Facing the suffering of the cross, he prayed to his Father in Matthew 26:39, "My Father, if it is possible, let this cup of suffering be taken away from me. Yet I want your will to be done, not mine."

Jesus openly expressed his desire for another way forward, and in the end he entrusted himself to his Father's will. Praising God amid uncertainty doesn't require us to deny our pain or pretend we aren't afraid. Praising God means we choose to trust his character even when we don't understand his plan.

After years of treatment, Nieder’s family has celebrated milestones in Chancey Grace's healing. Nieder described his daughter's battle as a testimony of God's grace. But this song is for those who are celebrating their miracle and those still waiting for it.

I am waiting on mine too. While I left the hospital with normal blood pressure, I still faced a difficult road. Grieving and healing losses required a lot of time. I initiated difficult conversations. And I am learning to trust God daily while facing circumstances I can't control, even today.

Perhaps you're waiting for healing today yourself or praying for someone you love. I can't promise your circumstances will turn out the way you want, but I can encourage you to keep bringing your requests to God. Remember, his goodness doesn't depend on you getting the outcome you want. You can trust God before you know how the story ends, and even while you wait, you can praise him all the same.
