God's Goodness in Our Repentance

Have you ever needed someone that you know that you've wronged? I'm going to tell you guys a quick story about when I was a kid and a mistake I made with my big cousin. It's around Christmas time, and this cousin has this really cool toy. It was far too advanced for me to understand what it actually was.

I just knew it looked really cool. It was one where you can build it up and make it look the way that you want it to. And I remember he went downstairs to get some food and it was just me and the toy. You already know what happened. So I went and I tried to play with the toy. Tried to make it my own and I ended up ruining what he had built.

I knew he was going to be back upstairs in just a second. It was just me and the toy. So the evidence was there. I had to fess up. I remember being so nervous that either one I was going to get beat up by my older cousin or two, he was going to tell my parents, which also meant trouble.

Instead, even though he was mad, he actually showed me how to use the toy.

A God Who Works for Those Who Wait

That's exactly what the feel is for Isaiah chapter 64, verse 4. We're going to read that together. It says, for since the world began, no ear has heard and no eye has seen a God like You, who works for those who wait for Him.

The whole chapter, Isaiah chapter 64, is a chapter that is full of God's goodness. And at the same time still pleading for God's mercy. In verse 4 specifically is a lot like me saying thank you to my cousin for not getting me in trouble when I knew I deserved it. The truth of the matter is, repentance is really difficult. God understands that. What I learned here in this verse is that repentance also includes worship for the whole chapter. There's a lot of "Lord, will You forgive us for what we've done?" And still, verse 4 includes His goodness.

Questions for Reflection

I have a couple questions for you guys. And maybe it's something that you can chew on throughout your week. Maybe it's something that you already have an answer for. First question I want to ask is where has God been faithful and worked for you when you know you didn't deserve it? I know for me, there's been multiple times that He's gone before me, blown my mind in a way that He's blessed me, and I just made a mistake that I think is like a dire mistake moments before. But that's the type of love that we have from a Father.

Second question is how long has He been good? I know also for me, He's been good far longer than I was actually aware. And now that I've been walking with Him for a while, I'll look back on things and it makes me even more grateful now for the ways that He loves me, because He's been consistent. He hasn't changed even when I couldn't see it.

Third question I have for you is where do you need to maybe pivot, repent, and worship, all those things together? That's something that you have to allow God to reveal to you. And that can be scary. That can be something that is uncomfortable. But what we also realized here in verse 4 is the worship also gives us some goodness in a really difficult moment.

So that's my encouragement for you guys today. Maybe sit on those things. Allow God to reveal to you where He wants to meet you in those ways. And just know that we're praying for you. It's never easy, but it's always good.
