Clinging to God

Read the transcript from today's video devotional.

I cling to you. Listen to that word. It's not passive in any way. This is an active idea. This is not something that happens on accident. To cling to something is to take hold and to grasp it. And you can even think of squeezing, holding on for dear life.

This verse is so beautiful because it expresses what I think is true for so many of us on a regular basis. When it comes to the things that we're navigating and walking through in life. There are times where we just have absolutely no answers and we're desperate for direction, for guidance, for sustenance. And when this is occurring, it can feel as though we're kind of floating in space, like we don't really have any good footing because we don't know what to do in order to be able to move forward in any real and demonstrative way.

A Sliver of Hope

But when you see that there's this hope that the writer clings to. It's like you got a little sliver of hope and he just grabs onto the edge of the fabric in order to not let go. Here's my one way forward, and if I can just hold on, maybe I'll make it through. It's really important to see this, because this whole psalm is filled with these kinds of words that aren't passive, but are very, very connective to the human experience.

In the beginning of the psalm, it talks about how the soul thirsts and longs as a dry and weary land where there is no water. This is the heart of someone who is going through and is desperate for any sort of hope. But do you know what is so beautiful about this? Not only can we relate to this writer of the Psalm, but we can also see something really beautiful in the follow up statement which says, I cling to you, but also Your hand holds me up.

God's Hand Holds Us Fast

I don't know if we catch that when we read it, but we can relate so much to the desperation of clinging and holding on. But what's wild is the writer even understands, in the midst of the desperation, in the midst of the clinging, in the midst of them trying to figure out the way forward. The hand of God is right there, holding them fast.

It can feel sometimes like God is distant from us in times where we're clinging for hope. But the encouragement of Scripture, and what I hope you're encouraged with today is even when it feels like God is distant, even in the times where we're clinging, although we may not feel it, although we may not see it. God in His presence is right there with us.

So as you're going through today and you're considering the season of life you're in, I want you to think about the fact that you're desperate clinging to God is not unfounded. He's with you, and He will be with you in the days ahead.
