Hip-Hop trailblazer Trip Lee might be best known for his award-winning rap music, but the multifaceted genre leader is showcasing a new aspect of his artistry via a fresh worship endeavor under the moniker Brag Worship. The Texas native recruits former Maverick City Music member Naomi Raine for Brag Worship’s latest single, “Fortress.”
The bright original is inspired, in part, by Psalm 18:2: “The Lord is my rock, my fortress, and my savior; my God is my rock, in whom I find protection. He is my shield, the power that saves me, and my place of safety.”
Both Lee and Raine are credited as co-writers on the easy pop gem that boasts of their confidence in a God who always protects and always shows up. Raine’s buttery vocal seamlessly glides over a simple guitar and subtle electronic elements as Lee occasionally interjects with syncopated affirmations. The sunny track is full of contradictions that ring true within God’s upside-down Kingdom here on earth. Raine shines as she sings the second verse:
I’m lost when I declare that I’ve arrived (Oh)
I’m blinded when I don’t look to the skies (To the skies)
Lord, keep me from believing my own lies, oh
I’m feeble ’til my fortress
I’m feeble ’til my fortress arrives
“Grateful to have worked on a song with one of my favorite worship artists,” Lee says of the recent offering. “It’s a message we’re both passionate about, that God is strong even in our weakness.
“Fortress” is one of eight recordings that comprise Brag Worship’s debut EP, “For Your Glory.” In addition to Raine, Lee’s new worship era has also produced collaborations with Jonathan Traylor, Madison Ryann Ward and DOE, among other emerging voices.
“Worship isn’t a genre, it’s a response. It’s an expression that acknowledges the greatness of God,” Lee shares of the heart behind the innovative project. “Brag Worship is a new expression. Songs for me and songs for you. Songs for us to declare simple truths about God together, and boldly. Songs for us to BRAG.”
