I was sinking
But I’m singing now
I was, but God
But God had a different plan
I was drowning
But I’m dancing now

Anyone who has personally encountered the love of Jesus can identity with the lyrics that speak to a before and after kind of existence — what life looked like before God and what life looks like after God. Fused with straightforward language and a bridge that folds in familiar verses from “Amazing Grace,” “I Was, But God” is Elevation RHYTHM’s ultra-modern twist on the timeless hymn.
Written by Davide Mutendji, Leeland Mooring, Steven Furtick and Sydney James, “I Was, But God” serves as the follow-up to mega-smash “Goodbye Yesterday (feat. Gracie Binion),” the outfit’s biggest single to date. Both songs appear on their most recent album, “Victory Lap.”

On the strength of “Goodbye Yesterday” and “At The Altar,” their acclaimed collaboration with Tiffany Hudson and Abbie Gamboa, Elevation RHYTHM was recently nominated for three GMA Dove Awards. Sharing the stage with sister collective Elevation Worship, they performed a mashup of hits on this year’s awards show.
The group just wrapped their “Goodbye Yesterday Tour,” their first-ever headlining trek, which took them to cities both domestically and abroad. They’re set to join Elevation Worship on the next leg of the long-running “Elevation Nights” tour, which kicks off in late October and is scheduled to visit eight arenas.
