Brandon Lake has been steadily releasing a series of collaborations, mostly with country artists, including Lainey Wilson, Bailey Zimmerman and Cody Johnson. But the six-time GRAMMY® recipient recently broke with his winning formula to drop a surprise duet with Nick Jonas called “The Author.”

The Christian hitmaker and the pop superstar, who makes up one-third of multi-Platinum act The Jonas Brothers, debuted the original song during Lake’s penultimate date of his 50-show “King Of Hearts Tour” in his hometown of Charleston, South Carolina.

Penned by Lake, Jonas, Benjamin William Hastings, Micah Nichols and Trannie Anderson during a songwriting camp in late 2025, “The Author” questions our role in the bigger narrative God is writing. Centered on themes of identity, self-worth and surrender, the soulful track reveals Lake and Jonas wrestling with belief and, ultimately, choosing to trust their lives to the One who holds the pen.

The two celebrated artists find common ground within the lines of the song. Both are pastor’s kids who have doubted their place in God’s story at one time or another. Both grew up in church. In fact, The Jonas Brothers started their career in faith-based music, signing to a Christian label before exploding as a pop trio in the mainstream space. When their father was forced out of the church where he had served for a decade, Jonas admits he had to process a fair amount of church hurt in order to reconcile his current relationship with God. “The Author” seems to capture the vulnerability of this struggle perfectly.

Having just wrapped his massive “King Of Hearts” jaunt, Lake has been dropping big hints that a collaborative country album is on the way. He’s set to lead Cowboy Church on Sunday morning of CMA Fest in Nashville.
