First Things First - Consumed by Fire

"All the things that I have held dear
The vanities that whispered in my ear
What would I do if they all disappeared"

Every day, we see advertisements and promotions that seek to help people find what they want and learn where and how to get it, but it is rare for anything to truly satisfy. This world consistently stokes the flame of our desire for temporary things that will leave us feeling empty in the end. But the thought of losing these desires and aspirations can be daunting. These desires have become such a big part of our lives that we might fear to live without them. In “First Things First,” Consumed by Fire explores what remains when we surrender our earthly aspirations to God.

“First Things First” begins with a ticking piano melody akin to the ticking of a clock, as the song’s lyrics wonder what might happen if our quickly fading vanities were to vanish from us entirely? The song’s melody becomes more constant and unchanging as the song’s chorus declares a desire to seek God’s will rather than our own. The song’s modern, uplifting pop sound lends itself well in communicating the message of the frivolity of the world’s offerings and the innate joy and purpose found in Christ.

“First thing’s first I seek Your will Not my own Surrender all my wants to you Keep the first thing first” - lyrics from "First Things First" by Consumed By Fire

The song’s melodic shift highlights the way that the things of this earth fade fast, while the things of heaven last forever. These are the things we should focus our minds on. We do not need to waste our short time on earth being obsessed with things that are here one day and gone the next. Instead, we need to fix our eyes upon the gifts that God has for us and enjoy them in the time we are given.

“I don’t wanna love what the world loves
I don’t wanna chase what the world does
I only want you”

“First Things First” was part of the trio’s debut release alongside the single, “Hope Says” in October 2022. The three brothers, Caleb, Jordan and Josh Ward view their music as a chance to continue their father’s mission. “We’re able to take the things he taught us from scripture and everyday life and share it with others through our music and our shows. This is our opportunity to carry that torch for him.”
