Where Will Wisdom Come From?

Read the transcript from today's video devotional.

This 30th proverb was written by a man named Agur that we don't know very much about. In a typical proverb, as you read through the book of Proverbs, might begin with the author establishing his credibility before he passes on some wisdom.

It goes like this: I'm so and so, and I have had these kinds of experiences. I've lived around a long time and so you should listen to what I have to say. In fact, a lot of Solomon's proverbs begin that way. This proverb from Agur is very unique. He does not begin with his qualifications or his resume, his reason for why you should listen to him, and in fact, quite the opposite.

Recognize Your Limitations

Listen to the very beginning of this proverb in verses one and two. Here's what Agur says: "I am weary, O God, I am weary and worn out. Surely I am too stupid to be a man." Then down in our verse, verse 5, he says, "Every word of God proves true." I want you to pick up on that contrast.

He says, I am weary and worn out and stupid, but every word of God proves true. Do you want to be wise? Do you want to understand how to apply truth to your life. That's what wisdom is. The wisest of people recognize the limitations of their own wisdom, and they acknowledge the perfect wisdom of God.

Our Blueprint

That's what Agur does. Think about an architect who draws up these perfect plans for a building and those plans, that blueprint, need to be followed precisely. They need to be followed exactly. Otherwise that building is not going to stand. Those plans are going to talk about all the parts that are needed. They're going to talk about how they work together.

If it's not followed to a tee, you're going to have a building that just will not stand. The same thing is true for your life. You need to have a blueprint. You need to have a plan as you think about how you're going to build your life, how the different parts of your life are going to work together, and what the foundation is going to be. You need a foundation and that foundation should be the Word of God. Not man's wisdom, but God's wisdom. As this proverb says, every word of God proves true. That can't be said about man's wisdom.

Whose Wisdom Are You Going to Build Your Life On?

Whose wisdom are you building your life on? Whose wisdom are you going to build your life on? Your wisdom, your parents’ wisdom, your culture, your podcasts, your teachers, your professors? Listen, some of them may have wisdom, but your chief source for wisdom in building your life must be the Word of God, because every word of God alone proves true.

Why not recognize the limits today? The limits of your own wisdom, the limits of worldly wisdom. Why not approach God's Word? Approach God's Word with humility, eager to learn more about the world you live in. More about yourself. More about the God who is above all. Proverbs chapter 30, verse 5: every word of God proves true. He is a shield to all who come to Him for protection.
