8 Prayers for a Successful Stepfamily

We all want to be the best spouse and parent God intends us to be in our blended family. Being a part of a blended family can sometimes be relationally challenging, presenting unexpected complications, but prayer can help you survive and thrive. Here are 8 prayers for you to pray for your blended family.

1. FORGETTING THE PAST AND MOVING FORWARD

No, dear brothers and sisters, I have not achieved it, but I focus on this one thing: Forgetting the past and looking forward to what lies ahead. – Philippians 3:13 NLT

As I set my goals on what’s ahead, Father, help me to heal from the past and the way things used to be, both the good and the bad. At Your feet, I lay what was and how it affected me. I pray it won’t negatively affect the family You have given me. Let this be a fresh start, with You at the center. Amen!

2. FULL FORGIVENESS WITH NO TRACE OF ANYTHING BITTER

“If you forgive those who sin against you, your heavenly Father will forgive you. 15 But if you refuse to forgive others, your Father will not forgive your sins.” – Matthew 6:14-15 NLT

Lord Jesus, I believe Your death in my place wipes out the record of my wrongs. So much happened in my past that was hurtful. I forgive _____________ for _______________. Tenderize my heart and make me quick to forgive. I pray there will be no trace of bitterness in my heart carried over. Amen!

3. OVERCOMING REJECTION WITHIN THE FAMILY

Bless those who persecute you. Don’t curse them; pray that God will bless them. 15 Be happy with those who are happy, and weep with those who weep. 16 Live in harmony with each other. Don’t be too proud to enjoy the company of ordinary people. And don’t think you know it all! – Romans 12:14-16 NLT

Lord Jesus, I give You all the relationship struggles I have in this family, specifically with those I feel don’t fully accept me or my role. Give me the wisdom to love them, to speak life where they curse, and to have compassion for them when they are struggling with pain. Amen.

4. REBUILDING ON THE FOUNDATION OF REAL LOVE

Love is patient and kind. Love is not jealous or boastful or proud 5 or rude. It does not demand its own way. It is not irritable, and it keeps no record of being wronged. – 1 Corinthians 13:4-5 NLT

God, You embody love itself. Please fill me with this love. Let it overflow to the family with a lifestyle of patient kindness. Keep me from jealousy and from coming off proud or rude. Keep me from being irritable and help me keep no record of when my family members are hurtful. Amen!

5. ESTABLISHING NEW AND HEALTHY RELATIONSHIP PATTERNS

Always be humble and gentle. Be patient with each other, making allowance for each other’s faults because of your love. 3 Make every effort to keep yourselves united in the Spirit, binding yourselves together with peace. – Ephesians 4:2-3 NLT

Lord Jesus, You have made us new in You. Help me be humble and gentle with our family. To be patient and allow for their faults because of my love for them. Thank You for Your Spirit, which is powerful to produce these things in me, that I don’t have apart from You. Amen!

6. PEACE AND HARMONY IN THIS FAMILY

Do all that you can to live in peace with everyone. – Romans 12:18 NLT

Jesus, I invite You to work in this area where we struggle to agree. Help us to hear one another and do things differently. I trust You for wisdom to make progress in this area. Let there be a deep unity of heart and mind in our family produced by Your Spirit, and help us to lay down trying to make others feel bad by always being right. Amen!

7. A CULTURE OF RESPECT AMONG US

Respect everyone, and love the family of believers. Fear God, and respect the king. – 1 Peter 2:17 NLT

Father, I need grace and strength to show respect for those who may disregard me. Give me Your perspective and a love for those who may not even like me. Teach me how to treat them with deep respect and love them in their weakness and struggles. I pray they will feel respected by me and that I would represent Your light to them, for Your glory. Amen!

8. HOPE FOR A HAPPY FUTURE TOGETHER

I pray that God, the source of hope, will fill you completely with joy and peace because you trust in Him. Then you will overflow with confident hope through the power of the Holy Spirit. – Romans 15:13 NLT

God, I trust You for what’s ahead. I believe You have a much better perspective on our lives and family. Fill me with Your Spirit so that I overflow with hope. Let it permeate through our family as we trust You firmly. We believe You put us together as a family, and we ask for Your hand of blessing over what You have joined together. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen!
