What Can We Give God?

What do you give someone who has everything? I'm going to tell you a story about when I was about eight years old and celebrating Christmas with my family one year. I remember wanting to get my parents a gift, but the thing was, I had no money, I had no job. And not only that, but my parents were who I was relying on for my own gifts.

I remember my mom said to me, what you can give me is you doing well in school, you treating your siblings the right way and behaving the way you know you're supposed to. That's what you can give me. And it reminds me of this verse that we're about to read today, which is Psalm chapter 108, verse 5, and it says:

Be exalted, O God, above the highest heavens. May your glory shine over all the earth.

Our Worship

There's such a sweetness and a pureness to this verse because it's about worship. I heard a pastor say one time, the only thing we could ever give God is our worship. He doesn't need our money. He doesn't need our career or anything else that we can give Him. And much like my parents, He's the source of everything that we have as well.

So what can we give Him? It's a heart posture of worship. I don't necessarily know what you're going through right now. Maybe things are amazing. Maybe you have a lot to celebrate. Maybe worship right now for you looks like just a bunch of gratitude. And that's amazing. Maybe things are pretty difficult right now. And I know for me, in times when things are difficult, I've been in a place where it's like, okay, Lord, all I can give to you today is my yes.

And that's worship too. Much like my parents, that's the thing that God values—our heart posture, our willingness to say, okay, Lord, with nothing else that I can give you, this is all I have. It's my yes. It's my need for you. It's my ability to let you know how much you mean to me. Let you know how grateful I am just for the ability to breathe today. That's what worship looks like.

Making Space for Worship

I don't know, maybe today let's lean in and figure out where we need to slow down for a moment. I know life moves really fast, especially if you have a routine or a lot of things that you're responsible for. Maybe pause today. Take a moment. Reflect. Make some space to just sit in a place of worship.

Again, it's the only thing we can give Him. And I know with it being a relationship, just like my relationship with my wife, I want her to feel blessed by me too. That's my encouragement today. Psalm 108 and verse 5,

Be exalted, O God, above the highest heavens. May your glory shine over all the earth.
