You ever notice how people talk about what works in their lives? If they're on a diet, they want to make sure that they tell the whole world that this is the one and only diet that's working. Look at my results. I mean, they shout it from the rooftops. This is working.

In Psalm chapter 145, verse 5, this is what David tells us: I will meditate on your majestic, glorious splendor and your wonderful miracles. If we read Psalm chapter 145, this is David boasting about how good God is, how powerful God is. In fact, earlier in Psalm chapter 34, he's like, hey, taste and see that the Lord is good. He wants people to know, hey, I've tasted and seen that God is good. You should taste this too.

The Big Idea of Meditation

And for years people have tried to explain God. And how do we explain God? I mean, He's the Alpha and the Omega. He's the first and the last. And David says in verse 5, he says, I'm going to meditate. I will meditate on your majestic, glorious splendor and your wonderful miracles. There's this big idea of meditation in this verse.

And to meditate means to ponder or to think deeply. And David is calling us to think deeply about the things of God. Well, you might ask, like, how do we meditate? Let me give us just a practical example. If I say "follow me and I will make you fishers of men," one way that we can meditate on that verse is by emphasizing a specific word. So I can say, "Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men." Or I could say, "Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men." So I'm emphasizing certain words.

Or another way that we meditate is by paraphrasing the verse. Now why do we do that? We do that because it's hard to enjoy something that you and I don't understand. And the more we understand who God is, the more we enjoy Him.

Planted by Streams of Living Water

And what I love about what the Bible says when it comes to meditation - Psalm chapter 1 and verse 3 says that they are like trees. They're planted by streams of living water. Think about that. They're like trees. People who meditate are like trees that are planted by streams of living water.

So when the rains come, there's stability. And a person who meditates is a stable person. Now, the thing about trees that are planted by streams of water, even if there is no rain, they still survive because they're planted by streams of living water. See, this is a beautiful picture of somebody that is stable and is strong in hard times because hard times will come.

But if you and I are stable, if we continue to meditate on who God is, here's what happens. We become stable people and we become confident in the character of God. Because the more I understand about who God is, I can approach Him with confidence and it even changes the way I pray. Because the more I understand about how powerful God is, I start to understand how God is able. So I pray with confidence.

So may we be a people that meditate on God's goodness. Because when we do that, we are a people of stability. And when the storms of life come, we will be stable.
