I remember when I was a teenager and my buddy and I would always argue about who the greatest baseball player was. He was a big Kobe fan, and I was a big Michael Jordan fan. We had their jerseys, their cards, and we studied their stats. We were obsessed with these players. It's almost like we idolized them.
I find it amazing, even in today's day, how we are so amazed at sports stars. It's almost like we worship them. We spend so much time and resources on these players and on these teams. However, when it comes to the things of God, sometimes we give our leftovers and we don't give the attention that He deserves.
God Has No Equal
Today we find ourselves in Psalm chapter 150 and verse 2, where the psalmist says, "Praise Him for His mighty works; praise His unequaled greatness." Pay attention to that phrase—unequaled greatness. In other words, God has no rival. He has no equal. There's no one like our God, and the psalmist commands us to praise Him. Earlier it said, "Let everything that has breath praise the Lord."
When I read this, I ask myself, why do we praise God? Do you ever ask yourself that question? Why do we spend so much time preparing to go to church? I live in Nashville, so there's a lot of songwriters around here, and they meet just to write songs about how good God is. Why do we spend so much time and energy to praise God? We use drums, guitars, our vocals—and it's because He's worthy. It's because we praise Him for His unequaled greatness. There's none like Him. There is none like our God.
When Praise Feels Difficult
When the psalmist commands us, you might look at that and say, "You know, I don't have it in me to praise God right now. In fact, when you look at my world, there's loss. There's defeat, there's discouragement. There might even be some despair."
If that's you today, I want to remind you: You have a God who is mighty. It says "mighty works." We praise Him for His mighty works. That means God is able. All throughout the Scripture there's this theme—God is able. He's able to transform a life. He's able to provide. He's able to restore.
Making the Decision to Praise
If you're going through a tough season right now and you're struggling, and I've been there where I'm in church and I don't want to open my mouth because I'm hurting, because I'm depressed, or because I'm struggling to make it another day— if that's you, make a decision to praise Him. God is able and God will never leave us. He is for you. Praise Him today.
