Years ago I had a basketball practice when I was in college, I will never forget. I remember my red Nike high top tennis shoes and I'm doing sprints and I'm thinking I'm getting really tired.
We run to the free throw line and back to the baseline. Then you run to half court and back to the baseline. Then you run to three quarters court and back to the baseline, and then you run all the way to the end baseline and then back. We did that several times.
I will never forget as I was running my last little race to get finished for practice, I was thinking, this is the most tired I have ever been. I want to quit so bad. Have you ever been really tired or really burned out? This verse today has some tremendous encouragement for us.
Come to Jesus When You're Weary
First of all, as you look at the verse, He says, "come to me." What do we go to when we’re tired? It's easy to go to our phone and do the desk scroll, or look at the television set, or call a friend, or to be distracted. These aren't necessarily all bad, but the greatest thing that you and I can do when we're tired, when we're weary, is come to Jesus Christ.
He made you. He loves you. He knows exactly what's going on in your life and in my life. First of all, just come to Him. Secondly, He says right there, "come to me when you're weary and carry heavy burdens." He says, "and I will give you rest." Do not only come to Him, but come to Him for rest.
Jesus Gives True Rest
The Bible says that Jesus Christ is the one that you can come to for rest. Think about your life- your family life, your personal life, or your work life. Maybe you go to the gym, whatever it is. Are you tired? Are you burnt out? Jesus says, come to Me and I will give you rest.
This is such tremendous encouragement as you think about your life. Think about inventory of your whole life. What are the things that are robbing you of energy? What are the things that are causing you to feel burnout? To feel stress? To just feel like you can't go on? Again, this verse is tremendous encouragement for us because Jesus says basically, come to Me because there's rest in Me.
Choose Jesus Over Distractions
As you think about the rest of your day today, what can you do today? Instead of going to your phone to be distracted, or to the television to be distracted, or to other things to be distracted- how can you come to the Lord Jesus Christ and receive the rest that He has for you? I love 1 Peter 5:7 where Peter says, "casting all your cares upon Him because He cares for you."
God wants you to work for Him. He wants me to work hard for Him and serve Him, but He also wants us to know that He is there, able to help us when we need the rest that only Jesus Christ can give. Come to Him because rest is found in Jesus Christ.
