One thing is certain. Life involves change. There’s an old song that says, "The more things change, the more they stay the same." There's another song called "Seasons Change." If you think about it, life is constantly changing. During change, it's very easy to be unstable. I used to love skateboarding. I was actually okay at it for a kid who grew up in the Midwest. My kids finally got one of those rip sticks. Not four wheels, like a skateboard, but just two wheels. I got on it. I thought I could be really good at it, and I'll never forget. The board flipped underneath me and I fell right on my elbow.
That's the type of instability that can happen if we don't handle change the right way. Our Verse of the Day addresses some of these important things about change when the writer addresses God. He says this in Hebrews chapter 13 verse 8: Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.
Two Principles About Change
There's two main principles of change I want to look at today. As we look at Hebrews again, the book of Hebrews is all about Jesus Christ. He is superior over everything, over every person, over every Old Testament figure. He is the one whom we are to worship.
First principle: Life's full of change. As I mentioned—think of family. I have several children now. I have a grandchild coming. Health changes, job changes, all kinds of things in our life change. We have to be ready for change. How do we do that?
Secondly, very simply, Jesus never changes. Our Verse of the Day: Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.
I love the verse in Lamentations chapter 3 which says, His mercies are new every morning. I want you to think about that. Wherever you’re at as you listen to this—you're living the new mercies that are for us. Right now, today, tomorrow, and all the rest of your tomorrows. You're going to be living these new mercies for the rest of your life. They're not going to run out.
Jesus Is Unchanging Forever
Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today. He's immutable—a big theological word. He's unchanging forever. This is incredibly comforting because if God wasn't true, if He wasn't holy, if He wasn't righteous, we would worry. Is God really going to show up today like He did yesterday? Will He really be who He says He is in the future? He's really this way forever. Infinite. He really is. The Bible says it's impossible for God to lie.
As you think about this passage in Hebrews 13, I want to look at just a couple of thoughts. If Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today and forever, number one, He can be trusted. We can and should trust Him. If we don't, it's easy to worry, isn't it?
Jesus said, thinking of Matthew 6, "Don't worry. Don't worry about what you're going to eat. What are you going to drink? What are you going to wear? Look at the birds. I take care of the birds." Somebody once said—scientists even say this—that there are around 18,000 species of birds. Of all the animals Jesus could have said to look at, He says, "Look at the birds," because they're everywhere. "I want you to look at those little birds, and I feed the birds. I'm going to take care of you. Why? Because I'm the same yesterday, today and forever." Jesus can be trusted.
Trust and Follow
Because He can be trusted, Jesus should be followed. You and I should follow Christ. As we look at this beautiful verse, He's the same yesterday, today, and forever. We can trust Jesus and we should follow Him. I love that little song we sing in Sunday school: "Trust and obey, for there is no other way to be happy in Jesus but to trust and obey."
He is the same yesterday, today, and forever. He is for you—Romans chapter 8 verse 31. Romans chapter 8 verse 34 says, Jesus Christ is praying for you. Romans chapter 8 verse 26—the Holy Spirit intercedes for you. You have God on your side. You have a God who is the same yesterday, today, and forever. Let's trust Him. By the grace of God, let's follow Him because He's forgiven us all of our sins. He took the greatest debt that we have. Today, let's trust Him with our lives and live for Him.
