One Gracious Blessing After Another

Man, this is a beautiful description of the heart of God for our lives when we're walking with Him. We see how His abundant grace is poured out in our lives. It doesn't take much for each one of us, if we consider our journey along the way with Jesus, to think about the situations where we received grace, where we deserved something far different than that.

When You Have Abundance, It Spills Out

I was thinking back to when I was a little kid, and you get some money along the way for whatever reason. Maybe you do a little odd job, or maybe you got an extra five bucks in your birthday card. But when you're a kid and you get a little bit of extra money, man, that's a good feeling. You're starting to think about how am I going to spend this? What am I going to do with it? And we all know the old adage, it's probably burning a hole in your pocket. You want to spend that money as quickly as possible.

I was thinking about being a kid and I had a little group of friends. We all kind of ran together back up where I grew up in New Jersey and every now and then we'd go to the corner store, and if one of us had some extra money, man, you would have thought we were millionaires. I remember having a little extra cash that maybe I got for my birthday, and we'd walk in there like kings, asking them to give extra Tootsie Rolls and extra candy and just pass it out amongst the friends.

Because when you have an abundance, that abundance starts to spill out on those that you love. It's like pouring out, and it can't even really be contained because there's a joyfulness in that giving. I remember what it felt like to bless my friends when they didn't have, but I could be gracious to them so they could receive.

God's Heart of Abundance

And I know that's a silly analogy when you think about the heartbeat of the living God, but it reminds me of that feeling, that idea that He has for us. It extends beyond a disconnected relationship of God way up there and us down here. But it's out of His gracious abundance that we receive the blessings we receive in this life.

And of course, here we're reading this and John chapter 1 is describing how Jesus became flesh and the ultimate gift we receive out of the abundance of His grace is the forgiveness of our sins because of His work on the cross. What a beautiful gift and what a thing for us to remember and celebrate today.

As you're going through your life today and you're making decisions and you're picking up kids and you're working at your job, just remember that there has been a grace extended to us that we could never, ever deserve - the gracious gift of the love of Christ and salvation that comes from Him.
