Finding Your Calling While You Wait

Read the transcript from today's video devotional.

I spent most of my college and teenage years asking the question, God, what should I do with my life? Where do You want me to go? What job do You want me to have? What school should I go to? Who do You want me to marry? I wrestled through all these things constantly. If I'm being honest, it was a little stressful.

If I were to categorize what people go through when they ask questions like this, I would probably say people are searching for their calling. Lord, what is my calling in life? It's a good question to wrestle through because each one of us is wired uniquely. We have our own set of gifts. We think a certain way, we talk a certain way, and we're all called to be a part of the body. There are no two alike as we serve God together.

That doesn't help us when we’re answering the question, God, what should I do right here and right now? What if the answer to the question, “God, what should I do” is actually easier to find than we realize?

God's Call in the Present Moment

In our verse today, Romans chapter 15 verse 2, the apostle Paul says, We should help others do what is right and build them up in the Lord.

I've seen a lot of good people, a lot of Jesus-loving people wander a little bit aimlessly through life because they're always asking this question. God, what do you want me to do? Should I take this job or that job? Should I work here or there? Should I go to school in this state or that state? I thought the same thing when I was wrestling in high school. I thought I wanted to be an attorney, and then I ended up going to school for graphic design. Then I switched my major to business marketing, but then I ended up working in a church, and I just never left pastoral ministry.

It was something that I never planned to do, and I wish I could say that through all of that, there was this moment where God spoke from the heavens and He said, Chris, this is what I want you to do. But the honest answer is, I never had that moment with God.

While You Wait for Direction

Maybe you're searching. Maybe you're wrestling through those questions. God, what should I do? You may be hoping for an answer that's so specific and unique to you. I pray that God would give it to you. But while you're waiting to hear that answer, I want you to look back to our Verse of the Day.

God, what should I do? Well, God calls us to redeem the time that we have. He calls us to look to others, to seek to meet needs where we are right now, to glorify God in every moment and every opportunity possible.

I hope that's a relief and encouragement for you. As you look towards the next season of life and as you wait to hear the Spirit prompting you to go in this direction or that direction, remember that right now God has surrounded you with people that you can love and people that you can care for. He's giving you opportunities to tell others about Him. He's called you to worship Him, to look to Him, to draw near to His heart.

It's like what Paul says in Colossians: Whatever you do in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, giving thanks to the Father through Him. Wherever you're at in life, let's look to others to support them, to direct them to Jesus as we glorify Him together.
