7 Ways to Increase Your Time in Prayer

Christian Living

Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need and thank Him for all He has done.” – Philippians 4:6 NLT

George Müller, a 19th-century Christian leader and prayer warrior in England, was asked in an interview how much time he spent in daily prayer. For those of us living in this busy, modern era, his answer is humbling. His response was, “Hours every day. But I live in the spirit of prayer; I pray as I walk, when I lie down, and when I rise. And the answers are always coming.” It’s not surprising then that he recorded 50,000 specific answers to prayer in his journals.

Prayer is one of the greatest spiritual privileges given to followers of Christ. Yet many of us struggle to maintain consistency in prayer. Our busy schedules, daily distractions, and spiritual barrenness often hinder both the frequency and the extent of our prayer time. But God our Father longs for time with His children and is willing to help us develop our prayer life.

Understanding the Importance of Prayer

Reading Scripture is God talking to us, and prayer, simply defined, is us talking to God. The Bible says Jesus often “withdrew to the wilderness for prayer” (Luke 5:16 NLT). If Jesus, God’s Son, needed prayer, how much more do we? Prayer will strengthen our walk with God, keep us close to Him, and give us peace in difficult times.

How to Develop a Consistent Prayer Life

1. Establish regular prayer times.

One of the first steps toward more frequent prayer is to establish a regular prayer time. The Psalmist David declared, “Morning, noon, and night I cry out in my distress, and the LORD hears my voice” (Psalm 55:17 NLT). Having specific times for prayer builds a habit. The exact time of prayer matters less than faithfulness in praying. Start with a simple goal, even if it’s only five minutes. You will soon find yourself desiring longer times with God, and your time in prayer will naturally increase.

2. Create a place for prayer.

A specific place dedicated to prayer can help eliminate distractions and help you stay focused. Jesus often found solitary places to pray. Jesus instructs us, “When you pray, go away by yourself, shut the door behind you, and pray to your Father in private” (Matthew 6:6 NLT). It could be a quiet room, a chair in the corner of your home, or even during a break in your car. You will find that your prayer place becomes a sacred space.

3. Use Scripture in prayer.

Using Scripture can help keep prayers meaningful and filled with spiritual power. Hebrews 4:12 reminds us, “For the Word of God is alive and powerful” (NLT). The Bible provides us with guidance, encouragement, and wisdom for prayer. Using Scripture in prayer will keep us focused on God’s will and help deepen our conversations with Him.

4. Pray throughout the day.

Prayer doesn’t have to happen only during our formal devotion times. Scripture encourages us to remain in continual interaction with God. The Apostle Paul wrote, “Never stop praying” (1 Thessalonians 5:17 NLT). Like George Müller mentioned, this means developing a lifestyle of prayer. You can pray while driving, working, exercising, or walking. These brief prayers throughout the day can be as simple as, “Lord, give me wisdom,” “Thank you Lord for Your blessings,” or “Help me honor You today,” and they keep your heart connected to God.

5. Pray with faith and expectation.

Prayer becomes more meaningful when we believe God hears and answers us. Our faith gives us energy and confidence in our prayers. Hebrews 11:6 says, “And it is impossible to please God without faith. Anyone who wants to come to Him must believe that God exists and that He rewards those who sincerely seek Him” (NLT).

Creating a prayer journal will strengthen your faith.  Writing down prayer requests and recording answered prayers reminds us of God’s faithfulness. Seeing past answers to our prayers will encourage us to seek Him consistently.

6. Pray with other believers.

Praying with fellow believers inspires us and strengthens our personal prayer habits. Believers praying together was central in the early church. Acts 1:14 tells us, “They all met together and were constantly united in prayer” (NLT). Prayer groups, prayer meetings, and family devotions create both accountability and encouragement. Listening to others pray can teach us new ways to express ourselves in prayer.

7. Depend on the Holy Spirit.

Ultimately, a strong prayer life is not merely built by our own efforts but through the help of the Holy Spirit. Romans 8:26 teaches, “And the Holy Spirit helps us in our weakness. For example, we don’t know what God wants us to pray for. But the Holy Spirit prays for us” (NLT). When we feel weak, distracted, or uncertain, the Holy Spirit helps guide our prayers.

A Final Word

Increasing time in prayer requires desire, discipline, and dependence on God. He invites His children to come into His presence with love and grace. When we spend more time with Him, we will find our hearts transformed, our faith deepened, and ourselves in tune with His will.

Prayer

Lord, make my heart's desire to get to know You better. Increase my desire to come into Your presence daily to seek Your mind and will for my life. I ask You to show me how I can set aside life’s distractions and create time and space to come boldly before Your throne of grace on a daily, consistent basis. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Reflection and Action: Going Deeper

The 3-Minute Prayer Check-In

Goal: Build a habit of praying throughout the day.

Instructions:

  • Set three alarms (morning, midday, evening).
  • When the alarm sounds, stop for 3 minutes and pray.
  • Use a simple structure:
    • Thank God for one thing.
    • Confess one struggle.
    • Ask for one need.

Benefit: Creates regular connection with God without feeling overwhelming

The "Pray Before You Proceed" Challenge

Goal: Increase the frequency of prayer throughout the day.

Instructions:
Before these common activities, offer a brief 15–30 second prayer:

  • Before meals
  • Before meetings
  • Before driving
  • Before making decisions
  • Before going to sleep

Benefit: Trains your mind to seek God continually rather than only during scheduled prayer times.
