5 Prayers Against Nightmares

Christian Living

When you awake from a nightmare, it can be hard to separate what’s real from what your mind has crafted in your sleep. But God can cleanse our minds and give us new thoughts during our sleep. Here are five prayers for when you’re experiencing nightmares.

1. A Prayer for Before Bed

God of all comfort,

Thank You for always being with me. Clear my mind as I go to bed. Give me Your peace as you fill my mind with happy thoughts. Drive out fear as I abide in Your good and perfect love. Be my refuge and my strength.

In Jesus’ name, amen.

2. A Prayer for After Having a Nightmare

God of all truth,

Remind me what is good and true. Purify my thoughts and let me rest in Your presence. Comfort me with Your Spirit. Help me to see what is real and to trust in Your protection. Give me rest as I sleep.

In Your holy name I pray, amen.

3. A Prayer for When You’re Scared

God of protection,

Help me to not be afraid, because I know you are with me. I know that Your light shines in the darkness and the darkness cannot overcome it. Bless me with Your peace that surpasses understanding. Guard my heart and my mind. Let me feel your presence now and always.

In Your mighty name I pray, amen.

4. A Prayer for When You Can’t Sleep After a Nightmare

Lord of lords,

Settle my heart and ease my thoughts. When the storms of life come, please call them to be still so that I might find rest in you. Help me to fall asleep and remove any obstacles that stand in my way. You have promised rest and I know You will give it to me. Thank You for being trustworthy.

I pray this in Jesus’ all powerful name, amen.

5. A Prayer of Thanksgiving for the Morning

Heavenly Father,

Thank you for getting me through the night. You are so good to me. Thank You for Your unending love, care, and mercy that are new every morning. Help me to live this day for you. Teach me to abide in You as You abide in me. You are my Rock and my strength, now and always.

In Your perfect name I pray, amen.
