On the heels of instant fan favorite, “The King Is In The Room,” Phil Wickham unveils “What An Awesome God,” his modern-day take on a Rich Mullins classic.

The familiar worship anthem was part of the fabric of Wickham’s childhood. He remembers initially hearing the song during a child care session at church while his parents were leading worship next door at a Bible study. Later, “Awesome God” was one of the first songs the young worship leader learned to play on guitar. Now, two decades later, he’s introducing it to an entirely new era of worshipers, who didn’t grow up with the hymn-life refrain like he did.
“I can’t believe I get to be a small part of this song’s story,” Wickham reflects. “I feel like every generation carries this song in a new way, and I’m honored to bring it to this one.”

The father of four cites Psalm 95:3-5 as continued inspiration for breathing new life into the revered church standard: “For the Lord is an awesome God; a great king above all divine beings. He holds in his hand the lowest parts of the earth, and the mountain peaks belong to him. The sea that he made belongs to him, along with the dry land that his hands formed.”
Together with longtime collaborator Jonathan Smith, the chart-topping artist wrote a trio of new verses around Mullins’ signature chorus. Wickham’s piano-led, beat-laden lyrics paint our Creator as the ultimate artist and look toward His triumphant return. Loaded with vibes and straightforward language, “What An Awesome God” is further accented by a full choir as Wickham’s fresh additions give way to a group of enthusiastic voices, unified in extolling the awe and majesty of Jesus.
Wickham teased his innovative twist on the track on his recent “Singalong Tour” with friends, Cody Carnes and Kristian Stanfill. Upon its release, he performed it at Chris Tomlin’s “Good Friday Nashville” event as a surprise guest. This fall, “What An Awesome God” is sure to be a standout moment in the SoCal native’s setlist as he fronts the “Air1 Worship Now Tour,” alongside Charity Gayle, Josh Baldwin and Benjamin William Hastings.
