TobyMac recently asked the legendary CeCe Winans to add her unmistakeable vocals to his original song, “Oh My Soul (Psalm 103).” The pop-gospel track — which he wrote with Bryan Fowler, Micah Kuiper and Shawn Newby — finds the hitmaker and the gospel music luminary trusting God’s plan and His perfect timing.
Calling Winans one of his “favorite vocalists of all time” and the duet a “dream collaboration,” TobyMac dubs the upbeat declaration one of the highlights of his new 12-track collection, “Heaven On My Mind.” Winans simply propels an already solid offering to an entirely new level. The song testifies to the reality that the Lord never leaves our side. Together, TobyMac and Winans worship a God who has seen them through their hardest days.
The standout borrows inspiration from Psalm 103, which proclaims, “Let all that I am praise the Lord; with my whole heart, I will praise his holy name. Let all that I am praise the Lord; may I never forget the good things he does for me” (v. 1-2).
“The Psalm says in the first verse, ‘all my inmost being praise His holy name,’” Toby offers in reference to the Scripture passage that anchors the lyrics. “If one person chooses to do that, this song is an answered prayer. So grateful to get to be a part of this one with my co-writers… To God be the glory.”
“Oh My Soul (Psalm 103)” originally appeared, sans Winans, on TobyMac’s “Heaven On My Mind,” which dropped in March. The effort’s dozen recordings chronicle the aftermath of learning to trust God again in the midst of immense grief and loss, following the tragic death of his son, Truett, as well as several additional family members and close friends.
This fall, after a brief run with fellow chart-toppers MercyMe and Matthew West, TobyMac will headline “Heaven On My Mind: Start to Finish Live,” an eight-date jaunt that will take him to intimate venues where he’ll perform every single track from “Heaven On My Mind” front to back.
