These words were written as Israel was surrounded by their enemies, and the point that Isaiah makes in this chapter is that it's the enemies of God that should be afraid, and God's people should not be afraid. They should not be afraid because God was with them to strengthen them, help them, and hold them up.
We are not Israel. These words were written for us, but obviously they weren't written to us. They were written for Israel, but we are also God's people. We're the people of God and God has not changed. The same God who was over Israel is the same God who is over you and me.
The Unchanging God
That God, He still strengthens His people. He still helps His people. He still holds up His people. Therefore, we have the same reason not to be afraid. In the New Testament, in the words of Jesus Himself, we're told the very same thing. For example, in John chapter 14, verse 27:
Peace I leave with you. My peace I give to you, not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled. Neither let them be afraid.
Do not be afraid. Isaiah says it, Jesus says it, and that's easier said than done, isn't it? It's not like there's just a switch that you can flip when you're afraid, and you'll no longer be afraid.
Facing Your Fears
What is it that you are afraid of today? What is it you're fearful of? Are you fearful of dying? Are you fearful of pain? World War? Failing? Rejection? Whatever it is that you're afraid of, you know that there's nothing that you can ultimately do to control others or to control your circumstances. How are you supposed to not fear?
You need to preach the truth of this verse to yourself. You need to remember that God will strengthen you, to remember that God will help you, to remember that God will hold you up with His victorious right hand. Whatever it is that you are afraid of, go ahead and think about it now.
Apply God's Truth
Remember, what is it that came to mind even a minute ago when I asked that question? I'll ask it again. What is it that you are afraid of? Think about it. Now, with that fear in mind, I want you to read this verse and say this verse to yourself again. Isaiah chapter 41, verse 10:
Don't be afraid, for I am with you. Don't be discouraged, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you. I will hold you up with My victorious right hand.
