I have to be honest, some days I don't feel like going to church at all. Some days I don't have it in me to lift my voice and praise the Lord. What I've learned is praise is not an emotion. Praise is not a feeling. Praise is a decision that I make.
In our verse today in Isaiah chapter 25 and verse 1, Isaiah says this: "O Lord, I will honor and praise Your name, for You are my God. You do such wonderful things. You planned them long ago and now You have accomplished them." This is Isaiah and he is making a decision to praise the Lord. One of the reasons he can do that is because he remembers. He says, "you planned them long ago and now you have accomplished them." He recalls and remembers how good God has been to him.
Giving God Your Whole Life
Maybe you are in that season where you're struggling to lift your voice. Maybe you're even struggling to go to church and praise with your brothers and sisters in Christ. Can I just encourage you? Out of all the times that I've gone to church and I didn't feel like going, I've never regretted it. Here's why.
Something happens when we praise. Something happens when we take the attention off of ourselves and we say, "Lord, you're worthy, you're in control. You deserve my praise." We don't just give God lip service. Let's take it a step further, God actually wants our lives. He wants my thoughts. He wants my relationships, my money. He wants me to include Him in the decisions that I make. That's praise: giving God our whole lives.
Finding Reasons to Praise
In those moments where we're struggling to praise and we're thinking, "I don't know if I have a reason," can I just remind you today? If you have breath in your lungs, you have a reason to praise. If God has redeemed you and saved you, you have a reason to praise.
Maybe you need to go back, like Isaiah, and say "you planned them long ago and now you have accomplished them." It says "you do such wonderful things." Maybe you need to go back and remember the wonderful things that God has made, that God has done in your life.
A Personal Relationship
I want to end with this. What I love about this verse is he says, "you are my God." It's very personal. Isaiah has a history with God. The beautiful thing about that is when you and I have a personal relationship with God, when we have that history— I can remember some moments, even in my car, in my home where I've talked to the Lord and God has answered a prayer. When we have that history, it makes it easier to praise.
Maybe you're watching this and you're like, "I can't say that He's my God." The day of salvation is today, and my encouragement to you is to turn to the Lord today.
