Read the transcript from today's video devotional.
Years ago, I had a pastor and mentor who encouraged me to wake up every day and ask God the same question: "What would You have me do today?" While I'm not perfect at it by any means, I still try to ask that question before I even open my eyes. "God, what would You have me do today?" I'll be honest, there are some days where I feel like I get a very specific answer, and He wants me to contact somebody or write something down to use for later.
There are other days where I don't get a response, and it's just a reminder to live every day faithfully, even in the small things. What blows me away even more, whether or not I feel like I get a specific answer, is just the fact that when I ask that question, it delights God's heart that He actually wants to involve me and you and all of His people in His plan.
Invited Into Partnership
That's what we read about in our verse today from 1 Corinthians chapter 1, verse 9. The apostle Paul writes, "God will do this, for He is faithful to do what He says, and He has invited you into partnership with His Son, Jesus Christ our Lord." Do you ever stop to think how powerful that is? That God has invited us into partnership with Him?
The perfect God of the universe, who created everything around us with His mere words, is inviting us to partner with Him in bringing glory to His name through this creation. That is so incredibly weighty- not because we're awesome or because we're so critical to accomplishing His will, but just because He gets joy out of working alongside His people.
It's like when a teacher allows you to pick your group for your group project. God has picked us for His group project. What blows me away even more about this verse is the context that it was written in. Paul writes this to the church in Corinth—not because they're crushing it, not because they're doing great, but because there are some major issues rising up in the church.
A Reminder of Our Calling
Rather than berating them or yelling at them or arguing with them, what he does is he reminds them of their calling. He lifts them up and he says, "Remember this one thing: that God has called you, His people, into partnership with Him to accomplish His will." The Bible talks about the Spirit specifically in the Gospel of John using this word "Paraclete." It means advocate or helper. It's the same root word that we get the word "parallel" from. It's a supernatural joining together with the Spirit where we're headed in the same direction, drawing near to Christ each and every day. It is a partnership that is unlike any other that we will ever experience in this life.
God doesn't need us, but He wants us. Despite how insignificant you might feel, or maybe you feel ill-equipped or unprepared for the job, just remember that God has invited you all the same, and He's going to prepare you. He's going to equip you. He's going to lead you exactly where He wants you. It all starts with asking that question: "Lord, what do You want me to do today in this partnership that You've called me into?"
Let's celebrate that. Let's get to work and be about God's business, because we're doing it with Him.
