My teachers in high school told me, "You are in control of your life. You are the captain of your ship. Learn to trust yourself. Your destiny is in your hands." That sounds so inspirational. You could just put that on your wall, right? When I started to read the Bible and I understood what Christianity was really about, I started to understand that's anti-God. That is anti-Bible. You and I know as believers, we're called to give our lives to God, to trust in the Lord's leading, to trust God and not ourselves, and to relinquish control.
Understanding That Our Wisdom is Limited
I read this verse many times, and whenever I'm going through a tough season, I remind myself, "Okay, Lord, Your ways are higher than my ways." I try to remind myself that I'm not as in control as I think I am. I'm a finite human being who serves an infinite God. My wisdom is limited. God is omniscient. He knows all things. When I start to understand that, I remind myself, "I'm not going to understand everything. I have to learn to give thanks to God and trust that He's always working things behind the scenes, because He is."
In some of my darkest seasons of my life, I've had to remind myself, "Relinquish control. Let go. Trust that God is always working things out for your good." What I love about a scripture from Romans chapter 8 and verse 28, there's a couple of words there that say, "for we know"—"we" as believers. As believers, we know God works things out for our good because, like our text says, just as the heavens are higher than the earth, My ways are higher than your ways.
The Challenge of Trust
We can't see what God is always doing behind the scenes, but we can trust that He is doing something behind the scenes. I've said this in the past: a lot of life really boils down to the question, "Do we trust God?" Maybe you're watching this and you're like, "How can you just tell me that? I'm battling cancer or I'm battling depression and you're just telling me to trust God?”
This is what I want to say: The promise that we have as Christians is not that God won't take us through the fire, it’s that He's going to walk with us through the fire. I always ask myself, "Do I truly trust that God is with me? That when I have God, if I lose everything, but I have God, I have more than enough?" That's really the gospel, it’s that His presence goes before us.
God's Invitation and Perfect Timing
When we read Isaiah chapter 55, it starts out by saying, "Is anyone thirsty? Come and drink." This is an invitation to the Lord's salvation. I was reminded today of how my mom has always been praying for me since I was in high school. I remember straying and just kind of doing my own thing, and I always tell people I'm a byproduct of my mom's prayer life.
Maybe you're watching this and you have someone in your family that's not saved, and you're praying and you're wondering, "Will they ever come to the Lord?" Maybe you have a loved one who just keeps rebelling. I want to encourage you with this: Keep praying because you just never know God's timing. I'm thankful that my mom never gave up praying for me. I want to encourage you and remind you God is always working behind the scenes.
