The Word here is the logos. It's talking about Jesus. It's talking about the Son of God. "The Word gave life to everything that was created, and His life brought light to everyone." John pulls us all the way back to creation, and he tells us something that is really staggering here, and that is that in Jesus there was life. Not Jesus has life, not Jesus leads to life, not Jesus gives life, but Jesus—think about it—Jesus is life. That is, Jesus is the true source of all life.
In That Life Was Light
Then he says, in that life was light. That is spiritual light. It is the kind of light that exposes reality. It makes it so that you can see through the darkness. You can see spiritual reality. You can see truth. It brings clarity out of confusion. You know, many people today—and you were one of them if you're a Christian, and I was one of them—are stumbling around in the darkness. They might be the most successful people, maybe even the most admired people, but people who can only see so far. We're spiritually blind. We can't see spiritually. We can't see our sin. We can't see God. We can't see the way to salvation. We're stumbling around in the dark apart from Jesus.
But Jesus is life, and Jesus brings light and He makes everything visible. When Jesus does that, you see yourself for who you are. You understand your sin. You see the world for what it is. You see God for who He is. You see Jesus for who He is as the reconciler between us and God.
More Mercy in Christ Than Sin in Us
Richard Sibbes, the Puritan, he understood the sufficiency of Christ here and wrote, "There is more mercy in Christ than sin in us." That sentence, that truth belongs right here, because John is showing us that the light that is Christ is not overwhelmed by any darkness. The light of Christ is greater. The light of Christ is brighter. It is more powerful.
When your circumstances are difficult and when your circumstances make life seem hopeless, as they often do, remember that Christ's light is still shining. When your past condemns you, He will illuminate by His light the forgiveness that is in Him. When you can't find your way and you are confused, He will reveal the path before you.
Where Do You Need the Light of Christ?
Today, ask yourself, where do you most need the light of Christ today? Is it in your confusion? Is it in your fear? Is it in your shame? Is it in your guilt? Remember the truth of this verse in John chapter 1, verse 4: "The Word gave life to everything that was created, and His life brought light to everyone."
