The world we live in is full of people. If you haven't noticed, everyone has an outcome that they want to see and rightfully so. Everybody's lives are so different and they've all got their own stories, but sometimes it doesn't happen the way that we'd expect, and we're looking for something to hold on to. Today's Scripture speaks directly to that, and we're going to read it out of 1 Samuel chapter 2, verse 2. Here's what it says:
"No one is holy like the LORD! There is no one besides You. There is no Rock like our God."
Hannah's Story
The context of this Scripture is actually a story of someone processing through infertility. A woman named Hannah was praying and praying and praying that she would be able to get pregnant and have a son, but it just wasn't happening. The outcome was not what she expected, and the timing that she was hoping for.
And so one day she goes to the temple and she's praying so vehemently, so heavily. It looked like—in the Scripture it says that the priest saw her and he thought she was drunk. He comes up to her and says she needs to go home, but she tells him what she's praying for. And that was the moment where she was blessed and she was told he will have a son.
Her response to that, after she had Samuel, was to bring him back to the temple and dedicate him to the Lord for service. In the midst of all of that, she celebrates, and that's where our Scripture comes into play. She celebrates the fact that there is no rock like our God.
Why Compare God to a Rock?
And when you stop and step back, you think about that. Why would she compare God to a rock? It seems kind of silly when you think about it, but let's pull this apart. What can we see in the nature of a rock that we could compare God to? Well, first it's strong and it's sturdy. A rock isn't going anywhere, but unlike God, there are some elements of a rock that do change.
For example, if you have a rock sitting under a stream of water for a period of time, it can have sharp edges to begin with. But by the time a couple of years have passed, that sharp edge has actually been softened and smoothed out to where the rock is now slippery. If you hit it hard enough, the rock can shatter. That's nothing like our God.
God Doesn't Change
And I want to encourage you. You might be walking through something similar to Hannah, where you could be processing through infertility, or your family dynamic is up in the air and you're praying for reconciliation. Whatever it is you're facing, here is the reminder that we have from Hannah: that even though the outcomes weren't what she expected, God was strong.
Unlike an earthly rock, our God, when the elements run over Him, He endures them with us. He doesn't change. His characteristics are always the same. And if you hit Him hard with the things that are hitting you hard, He doesn't shatter. He doesn't break under the pressure.
So take courage today and put your trust in the one who doesn't change, who is always the same. He is for you. If you said yes to Jesus, you are in Him. The Bible says that He is with you always. So trust that even if the outcomes aren't exactly what you hope for in the timing that you would have expected, that God wants to be with you. So invite Him to sit with you, and He is trustworthy. He'll be strong on your behalf.
