I have some questions for you. Do you need God's strength? Do you want to see God's power put on display in your life?
Our Verse of the Day is found in Isaiah chapter 40, verse 29. It says, "He gives power to the weak and strength to the powerless."
This verse comes at the end of very powerful chapter. In fact, I want to challenge you today to take two minutes and read all of Isaiah chapter 40, because in this chapter, the prophet Isaiah creates this picture of God's power, of His grandness, of really His limitlessness. In fact, he says that God essentially has no equal, no rival, no one can compare to God. I think it's important for us to take a moment and to look at the power and the strength and the majesty of God, because if we don't understand the character of God and who He is, we can't really understand what it is He's promising us.
The Majesty of God
I want to read a little bit of Isaiah chapter 40 to paint this picture. It says this: "Who else has held the oceans in his hand? Who has measured off the heavens with his fingers? Who else knows the weight of the earth or has weighed the mountains? Who knows enough to give God advice or to teach Him? Has the LORD ever needed anyone's advice? God sits above the circle of the earth. The people below seem like grasshoppers to Him."
What an amazing picture of the power and majesty of God. Yet, even though God sees us as grasshoppers, He is willing and loving enough to share His strength and His power with us. I don't know about you, but just hearing that text makes me feel almost unworthy to even be in relationship with God, nevertheless to receive power and strength as a gift from Him. But what we know about the character of God is that He is a loving, a caring, and a giving God. He's not selfish. In fact, He's selfless. Today, if you're feeling unworthy, if you're feeling powerless, if you're feeling helpless or confused, I want you to know that God actually desires to give His strength and power to you.
Come in Your Weakness
Sometimes it can feel like, well, if I'm not strong, I can't go to God for strength. If I don't feel like a powerful Christian or this faith-filled believer that I'm somehow disqualified from going into the presence of God and asking Him for what I need. But friend, it's the exact opposite. God's not looking for strong people to give strength to. He's looking for the weak. God's not looking for the most powerful Christian on earth to pour out His Spirit's power on. No. He's looking for those who feel powerless and helpless, but are willing to go to Him to receive the power that only God can give.
Jesus Himself said this phrase, "Come to me, all of you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest." All throughout Scripture, from the Old Testament to the New, here is the message of God: Come to Me in your weakness. Come to Me in your vulnerability. Come to Me whenever you are struggling and you feel powerless in your situation. I will give you strength, and I will give you power.
