Exodus 15 is this beautiful song of Moses that was written right after the Israelites were delivered from bondage. They have just been in Egypt and they witnessed the power of God. God provided for them in the wilderness. God protected them. He guided them. Then we get to Exodus 15, and Moses makes this powerful statement: "Who is like you among the gods?" The word "gods" there is lowercase g, and those are the false gods of Egypt.
There Is Only One True God
When Moses makes this statement, "Who is like you among the gods?" he's saying there's only one true God, because then he says, "O LORD"—that's the God of Abraham, Isaac, Jacob. He's saying there is only one true God, and He's the one that delivered us. He's the one that set us free.
It's so important that we understand who God is. Here's why: because it affects how I approach Him. Later he says, "glorious in holiness"—that is, God is set apart. He is sinless. That should affect how I approach Him. There should be a level of reverence when I come to God.
What does that practically mean? I'm not saying you can't pray in your car or in your closet or wherever you pray, but when we approach God, we have to understand that we are approaching a God that spoke and things came into being. He parted the Red Sea. In Exodus 15, as we read here, he says, "Who is like you among the gods?" Moses wants everyone to know there's only one true God. The result of God working these miracles is worship.
Awesome in Splendor
He says He's "awesome in splendor." That is, when we approach God, we're captivated by His beauty. While we're here on earth, we have this short sliver of time to taste and see that God is good. How do we do that? When we spend time in God's presence, there will be moments of breakthrough in our lives where we sense the presence of God close to us.
I've experienced that. In fact, one of my favorite places to praise is, for example, my car. There have been moments where I just felt God so close to me. Here's what's interesting: that is just an appetizer of what's to come. The real meal is when I get to heaven. I get to experience that on a whole different level.
Performing Great Wonders
In this beautiful song of Moses, we learn about the character of God. He's awesome in splendor. Then he says, "performing great wonders." All throughout the Bible, we see God setting people free, working wonders. In fact, He works wonders, especially with people that have very dark backgrounds.
I've always used the example of Apostle Paul. He had this one goal, and it was to kill Christians. Yet when he had this encounter with the Lord, what happened? God completely transformed his life. And God is still doing that today because that's His character—He performs great wonders.
I don't know what giant is in front of you today. Maybe you have a diagnosis. Maybe you're struggling financially. Maybe you're depressed or anxious. Remind yourself of the character of God. Remind yourself that God is able, that He performs great wonders. At the heart of our faith, we believe that God can transform any life.
