Today's Verse of the Day is one of my absolute favorite in all of Scripture, and it's one that you've heard many times. Sometimes, if we don't take a deeper look at verses like this, we can overlook some of the truths that are found in them.
It comes from Hebrews chapter 13, verse 8. It says, "Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever."
That truth speaks to my heart in a profound way, because when I think about the unchanging, everlasting goodness of God and how that remains constant, I think about myself. I'm not the same as I was 30 minutes ago, let alone forever. He's the same. That is powerful.
Understanding the Context
If we really want to understand all of the truth this text is communicating to us, we must look at the context in which the author is speaking.
If you look at the verses surrounding this, Hebrews chapter 13, verse 7 says: "Honor and follow the leaders, those teachings of the leaders who have come and gone before us." That is teaching us how we are to stay focused in the Scriptures so they can help amplify our lives and make them better.
Beware of Strange Ideas
The verse right after, verse 9, says: "Be careful. Be wary of strange new ideas."
You guys live in the same world as me, so we want to stay away from that. Do you know why? Because Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever. He is unchanging.
Yesterday, Today, and Forever
I want you to understand that "yesterday, today, and forever"—one of the most beautiful things about that is it covers all tenses of life.
That means your past that you may not be so proud of, or some of those painful things that we carry with us. Guess what? Jesus is there, rooted. He's the same.
The right now storm that you may face, the situation or circumstance you don't see your way out of—the same good God, Jesus the Rock. He's there right now, unchanging, loving you through it all with a plan.
And Forever
Forever—that means all your tomorrows. Not just tomorrow—all of your tomorrows. He's already the solution to problems that haven't happened yet. Don't you worry your little heart.
This allows us to have a deeper trust in faith.
God's Promise
The most beautiful part of this verse that really gives me comfort when I think about what He's saying to us: God is not promising that your circumstances will change.
What He's promising is that He will be there through it all. He will not change. He's going to be with you in every single circumstance, every step of the way. He's holding you. He's keeping you—the same God who kept so many of our forefathers in the Bible, who kept all of His children safe, protected, and fed.
He's Doing That for You
He's doing that for you as well.
Be encouraged because God is the same yesterday, today and forever. That's a gift to us all.
