Planting Seeds of Peace

Read the transcript from today's video devotional.

All of us are affected by this particular worker—it's the farmer. Our verse today is really a tremendous verse. It comes from James chapter 3, verse 18.

It says, "And those who are peacemakers will plant seeds of peace and reap a harvest of righteousness."

There's another version that says, "The harvest of righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace."

The verse has an agricultural illustration within it, and I want to pull out a couple thoughts that I hope encourage us.

The Harvest of Righteousness

First is the harvest of righteousness. I grew up in Iowa and I saw it all the time. Corn everywhere. Rows of corn everywhere. Rows of soybeans everywhere. Why? Because Iowa is known as the Corn State. There's tons of agriculture, tons of farming that goes on. You look at all the corn and at all the soybeans. You look at everything, and you wonder, how did it get there?

Very simply, that hard-working farmer planted it. At the end of the year, they hopefully make a killing when they harvest. So, as we think about the harvest of righteousness, it says right there in the verse, and those who are peacemakers will plant seeds of peace. We have this harvest. What's the harvest in your life? What's the harvest in mine?

The Planters of Righteousness

Secondly, let's call it the planters of righteousness, because the verse says right there, "Those peacemakers will plant seeds of peace and reap a harvest of righteousness."

I want you to think about your life, and I’ll think about my life. What are you? What am I? What are we planting? What are we leaving behind us?

For me, it's been an argument, a disagreement, or I've been discontent. I have not been happy, and I really affect other people around me. Whether it's my wife, my family, my kids, or my coworkers—I'm just not leaving a harvest of anything helpful, anything that's healthy.

But this verse says, if we plant seeds of peace, we will reap a harvest of righteousness.

Called to Be Peacemakers

Jesus said in Matthew chapter 5, verse 9, "Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called the sons of God." This is an incredibly powerful section. In Romans chapter 5, the Bible says, if you know Christ, you have peace with God. Because you have peace with the Lord Jesus Christ, that should make us be able to be a peacemaker for other people and with other people.

Two Important Questions

As you look at your life, here are a couple questions: How well are you a peacemaker? How good are you at making peace? The Bible says the righteous make even their enemies live at peace with them. Are you a peacemaker? Am I?

Secondly, what's your harvest going to look like at the end? Because you've been sowing seeds of peace, you're going to get a harvest one day.

May God make you—may God make me—this type of peacemaker so that at the end of it all, we'll have a harvest of righteousness.

One day Jesus told His disciples a story to show that they should always pray and never give up.

Do not be afraid or discouraged, for the Lord will personally go ahead of you. He will be with you; He will neither fail you nor abandon you.”

Now may the Lord of peace Himself give you His peace at all times and in every situation. The Lord be with you all.

A truly wise person uses few words; a person with understanding is even-tempered.

Work willingly at whatever you do, as though you were working for the Lord rather than for people.

Rather, you must grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. All glory to Him, both now and forever! Amen.

No, the Lord’s delight is in those who fear Him, those who put their hope in His unfailing love.

He saved us, not because of the righteous things we had done, but because of His mercy. He washed away our sins, giving us a new birth and new life through the Holy Spirit.

And it is impossible to please God without faith. Anyone who wants to come to Him must believe that God exists and that He rewards those who sincerely seek Him.

So you see, faith by itself isn’t enough. Unless it produces good deeds, it is dead and useless.

So whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.

Listen to my voice in the morning, Lord . Each morning I bring my requests to You and wait expectantly.

And the very hairs on your head are all numbered. So don’t be afraid; you are more valuable to God than a whole flock of sparrows.

Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.

But now you have been united with Christ Jesus. Once you were far away from God, but now you have been brought near to Him through the blood of Christ.

But the person who loves God is the one whom God recognizes.

Let the sea and everything in it shout His praise! Let the fields and their crops burst out with joy!

But I am trusting you, O LORD, saying, “You are my God!”

For in Christ lives all the fullness of God in a human body.

God saved you by His grace when you believed. And you can’t take credit for this; it is a gift from God.

Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus.

Faith shows the reality of what we hope for; it is the evidence of things we cannot see.

Jesus replied, “The Scriptures say, ‘You must worship the Lord your God and serve only Him.’ ”

Let each generation tell its children of your mighty acts; let them proclaim your power.

Now may the God of peace make you holy in every way, and may your whole spirit and soul and body be kept blameless until our Lord Jesus Christ comes again.

My child, listen and be wise: Keep your heart on the right course.

So we must listen very carefully to the truth we have heard, or we may drift away from it.

Happy are those who hear the joyful call to worship, for they will walk in the light of Your presence, LORD.

God works in different ways, but it is the same God who does the work in all of us.

Let the message about Christ, in all its richness, fill your lives. Teach and counsel each other with all the wisdom He gives.

I will proclaim Your name to my brothers and sisters. I will praise You among Your assembled people.

Be happy with those who are happy, and weep with those who weep.

A person standing alone can be attacked and defeated, but two can stand back-to-back and conquer. Three are even better, for a triple-braided cord is not easily broken.

All the believers devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching, and to fellowship, and to sharing in meals (including the Lord’s Supper), and to prayer.

For where two or three gather together as My followers, I am there among them.”

So now we can rejoice in our wonderful new relationship with God because our Lord Jesus Christ has made us friends of God.

For God is not unjust. He will not forget how hard you have worked for Him and how you have shown your love to Him by caring for other believers, as you still do.

For there is one body and one Spirit, just as you have been called to one glorious hope for the future.

All praise to God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. God is our merciful Father and the source of all comfort. He comforts us in all our troubles so that we can comfort others. When they are troubled, we will be able to give them the same comfort God has given us.

We should help others do what is right and build them up in the Lord.

Let us think of ways to motivate one another to acts of love and good works.

So then, let us aim for harmony in the church and try to build each other up.

All praise to God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly realms because we are united with Christ.

Don’t let evil conquer you, but conquer evil by doing good.

Since we are receiving a Kingdom that is unshakable, let us be thankful and please God by worshiping Him with holy fear and awe.

Your laws are always right; help me to understand them so I may live.

So be very careful to love the LORD your God.

Imitate God, therefore, in everything you do, because you are His dear children.

Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and He will give you everything you need.

But LORD, be merciful to us, for we have waited for You. Be our strong arm each day and our salvation in times of trouble.

For as the waters fill the sea, the earth will be filled with an awareness of the glory of the LORD.

Teach me to do Your will, for You are my God. May Your gracious Spirit lead me forward on a firm footing.

Oh, how generous and gracious our Lord was! He filled me with the faith and love that come from Christ Jesus.

Yes, the LORD has done amazing things for us! What joy!

Give all your worries and cares to God, for He cares about you.

Don’t be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be discouraged, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you. I will hold you up with My victorious right hand.

So let’s not get tired of doing what is good. At just the right time we will reap a harvest of blessing if we don’t give up.

So faith comes from hearing, that is, hearing the Good News about Christ.

Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank Him for all He has done.

O Lord, you are so good, so ready to forgive, so full of unfailing love for all who ask for Your help.

Patient endurance is what you need now, so that you will continue to do God’s will. Then you will receive all that He has promised.

Every word of God proves true. He is a shield to all who come to Him for protection.

And who can win this battle against the world? Only those who believe that Jesus is the Son of God.

O LORD, I will honor and praise Your name, for You are my God. You do such wonderful things! You planned them long ago, and now You have accomplished them.

They are constantly in my thoughts. I cannot stop thinking about Your mighty works.

And now, dear brothers and sisters, one final thing. Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise.

But from there you will search again for the LORD your God. And if you search for Him with all your heart and soul, you will find Him.

The LORD is good, a strong refuge when trouble comes. He is close to those who trust in Him.

And don’t forget to do good and to share with those in need. These are the sacrifices that please God.

Acknowledge that the LORD is God! He made us, and we are His. We are His people, the sheep of His pasture.

Never be lazy, but work hard and serve the Lord enthusiastically.

Be still in the presence of the Lord , and wait patiently for Him to act. Don’t worry about evil people who prosper or fret about their wicked schemes.
