Deep down inside, every soul has a desire to be known. We all want to be known, but to be known means we have to be vulnerable and transparent. It really does take faith to be known and to open up to somebody. The thing is, many of us have been rejected and have given up on community. Maybe you've been even hurt by the church and you're like, Nah, I'm done with God.
The beautiful thing about God is that even though He knows the details of our lives, He still accepts us.
More Than the Sparrows
Here is Jesus teaching His disciples, and first He tells them to not be afraid. Then we get to our verse and He says, And the very hairs on your head are all numbered. He's reminding them, "I know the details of your life. So because I know, you can share anything with me."
There are some things in my life where I think, I don't even know if I want to share that with God because I feel shame. I feel guilt. This is a beautiful reminder that I can take whatever it is that I'm navigating through to the Lord. Why? Because He's a loving Father that wants to hear from me. No matter how long I've wrestled with this thing, whatever your thing is that you're struggling with today, God wants you to take that into His presence. Why? Because He understands. He knows every detail of your life.
He says this: So don't be afraid. Then He says, you are more valuable to God than a whole flock of sparrows. Sparrows weren't worth much. Yet God says this: I still take care of them. He says, Because I take care of them, how much more will I take care of you? Wow.
You Are Still Valuable
I've read this verse often, and I have to remind myself that even when I feel like God doesn't care, even when I've taken the same request over and over into His presence: God knows the condition of my heart. He knows how crushed you are right now. He knows how anxious you are, and He knows how discouraged you are right now. Listen, you're still valuable in God's sight. Whether He's answered your prayer or not, listen—He understands the details of your life.
Now, because we're valuable in God's sight, the question that I ask myself when I read this verse is, do I know how valuable I am? Because I know when God looks at me, He sees perfection because He views me through the lens of Christ, because I am in Christ. But do I know that I am a child of God? I'm a royal priesthood, that I'm His masterpiece, that I'm fearfully and wonderfully made? Do I know that? Do I own that?
God Cares About the Details
This was a beautiful reminder, and I hope this is a reminder for you today. No matter where you're at, if you're wondering, Can I talk to God about this? Does God care about this area of my life? Listen, it says, the very hairs on your head are all numbered. I mean, that's a lot of hairs. Yet He is concerned with the details of our lives.
Whatever it is you're wrestling with today, take that into the presence of God and know that God's going to meet you with His grace today.
