Becky Hansen talks with Lt Luis Villanueva about The Salvation Army's work in East Harris County. Especially in the last year of the pandemic, poverty is an issue for senior citizens, families with children, and immigrants. The Salvation Army has programs like the Boys and Girl's Club after school to feed kids, help with homework and also provide a safe place to stay until their parents come home from work. Senior citizens often don't have enough food to eat, or socialization outside of the pandemic, so The Salvation Army provides Meals on Wheels and other assistance to meet these needs. There are many immigrants in Southern Texas and they are often afraid to ask for help, so The Salvation Army looks for them and works to meet basic needs, not only with them but also 10 - 20 homeless in the area. Supported by their local church, the local community and other donors, they provide essential services for many in the area.
