In Portland, there are hundreds of kids living on the streets. Jeanice Lee talks with Pippa Arend the Development Director and Co-Founder of p:ear. p:ear builds positive relationships with homeless youth through education, art and recreation to help build more meaningful and healthier lives. p:ear is a acronym for Programs through Education Arts and Recreation. One of the main effects of homelessness is a sense of not belonging, so p:ear provides workshops and field trips to help build a sense of self-worth and to teach youth how to trust again, p:ear creatively builds pathways for youth to end their homelessness and poverty by providing job training and employment opportunities. Any youth 15 -24 years old who does not have a permanent place to stay can come into p:ear for services.
