This whole psalm is only five verses, so let me read all five verses to you. It says:
Shout with joy to the Lord, all the earth! Worship the Lord with gladness. Come before Him, singing with joy. Acknowledge that the Lord is God! He made us, and we are His. We are His people, the sheep of His pasture. Enter His gates with thanksgiving; go into His courts with praise. Give thanks to Him and praise His name. For the Lord is good. His unfailing love continues forever, and His faithfulness continues to each generation. (Psalm 100:1-5)
So many good things are told to us in this Psalm, and our verse of the day answers a very important question. It's a question that everybody asks, the question that you ask, that I've asked, and that question is: Who am I? Everybody wants to understand their identity. Who am I? It's best to answer that question with the Word of God, because the Bible is God's revealed word to us.
If we go to God's Word and we say, "God, tell me in Your word, who am I?" There are so many places we can go. Psalm 100 verse 3 is one of those places. We learn three things in just this verse about our identity.
Three Truths About Our Identity
Number one: God made us. This speaks to creation. Another psalm says that you were knit together by God. God designed you. He gave you your personality. He gave you your body. He gave you your soul. God has built you. You are a creation of God.
The second thing we're told here is not only that God made us, but now we are His. If you are a Christian, that means that you are a child of God. It means that you belong to God. It's the doctrine of spiritual adoption. It's why you call God your Father and why you refer to other believers as your brother or your sister. God not only made you, but now He has adopted you into His family, and so you belong to God.
The third thing we're told is a word picture: we are the sheep of His pasture. God made us. We are His, and we are under God's watchful care. It's what it means to be a sheep of His pasture.
Think about this. God, the God of the universe, He made you. He created you. At some point in your life, when you placed your faith in Christ, He adopted you, and He brought you into His family and into His kingdom. Now at this very moment, wherever you are, He watches over you and He cares for you.
I would pray that today your heart and your mind would be stirred as you remember the words here in Psalm 100 verse 3: "Acknowledge that the Lord is God! He made us, and we are His. We are His people, the sheep of His pasture."
