Most women know a ‘good hair’ day can change everything. “She had the makeover and she saw like, ‘wow, this is me?’” remembers Tanisha Akinloye, professional beautician in Southern Connecticut. She founded Empowering Through Beauty Foundation to connect professional hairstylists and makeup artists with women trapped by the indignities of living on the streets. “I always like to say that beauty is humanity – not vanity, but humanity.”

Akinloye sees the inner-beauty of women and girls begin to shine through as their outer appearances are professionally curled, coiffed, poofed, fluffed, teased out or blown dry – completely free of charge.  “We can love on people and have makeovers and show them the love of Christ through lipstick, through a haircut and through empowerment training,” she explains. The 6-week training provided by ETBF brings in social workers and job training experts to help women gain self-confidence needed to survive the streets and to make life-changing choices.

Empowering Through Beauty Foundation offers the free makeovers to provide hope and reconnect under-served people with their own intrinsic worth as human beings. “Even when we’re doing the hair and makeup and the personal and leadership development training, the main core of the message is they are made in God’s image.”

“It reminds them who they are – it makes them believe again.”
