Tom Gilles grew up in Milwaukee, Wisconsin as one of four kids. Full of energy, he discovered skateboarding at 11 years old. With skateboarding, he was always pushing his limits, but in Wisconsin, you can’t skate year round because of the snow. Problem solved when a friend introduced Tom to a snowboard, it was like skateboarding on the snow and Tom was hooked! That summer he worked and saved to buy his first snowboard and his dream of becoming an accomplished snowboarder began. He read all the magazines and watched all the videos and was fully committed to his dream, even though everyone said that it wasn’t possible. Where he lived, there were no mountains, in fact, his local ski resort was a landfill. But that didn’t stop him from dreaming! After high school he moved across the country to the mountains of Lake Tahoe, Ca.
He soon met a professional cinematographer and photographer and he ended up in the biggest snowboarding movie of the year, quickly receiving professional contracts to endorse products. He ended up being in the magazine he had once studied and spent the next 10 years traveling the world in search of the best snow. He filmed television commercials, set world records and snowboarded on every continent except Antarctica.
Tom now oversees Tom Gilles Consulting, which is made up of coaching, construction and public speaking. He is also a Director of Compassion Causes, a non-profit that builds clean water wells, and offers after school programs in Nicaragua.
Tom is passionate about inspiring kids to dream big dreams. And that you have the power to realize your dreams thru the choices you make and the attitude you choose regardless of the obstacles that surround you.
