With their latest song, “Broken Hallelujah,” off the album Life Is Beautiful (April 16, 2013), The Afters reflect on the hard times in life, and the importance of staying strong in your faith. “During the time we were writing ‘Broken Hallelujah,’ there were all kinds of crazy things going on,” band member Matt Fuqua explains. “The story of Job was on all of our hearts. When we got together to write a song about these experiences we thought about the story of Job and what he had gone through. It was just so beautiful and moving in a way that none of us were expecting.”
Life Is Beautiful talks about all the different aspects of life- the good, the bad, and the in between. “There were times when we were in tears writing that song [Broken Hallelujah.] We opened the book of Job and saw a man who experienced more loss than we could ever fathom,” says lead singer Josh Havens. “In the midst of all that, he shaved his head and took off his clothes so that he truly had nothing left, fell to his knees and worshiped God. ‘Broken Hallelujah’ is a song about praising God, even when the only thing we have to offer is our worship.”
The Afters first came together in Mesquite, Texas while Josh Havens, Matt Fuqua, Brad Wigg, and Marc Dodd were working together at a Starbucks coffee shop. The guys got their start as a band by playing for customers. "I'm sure we weren't supposed to be playing music on the clock, but the customers liked it," Josh jokes.
From there, the band played an acoustic show at a church conference, and were surprised by the positive feedback. "We thought it would be fun to play a show and then go back to our bands," Matt says. "Instead we were overwhelmed with incredible feedback from people. We decided to keep playing together and see where it took us."
Shortly after, the group singed a record deal, and in 2005 released, I Wish We All Could Win, followed by Never Go Back to Ok in 2008, and Light Up The Sky in 2010, which features the hit song, “Lift Me Up.”
The album Light Up The Sky was written after losing their longtime friend and manager to a two-year battle with pancreatic cancer. “The story behind Light Up the Sky is a part of the story of all of us,” Matt shares. “It’s a picture of what it looks like when you make it through a really challenging time, and you look back and see how God was using all of those things for good and that you were never alone.”
Besides recording albums, the band currently wrapped up the United We Stand Tour, with Building 429, and special guests- Hawk Nelson, and Finding Favour. With everything they endured, the band is more excited than ever about their new phase of life, and are truly enjoying the journey. “God brought us through,” adds Matt. “[He] has really restored the excitement and life we had when we were kids making music for fun at the coffee shop.”
